Department of Leather Engineering

The Department of Leather Engineering at Ege University is a well-established department whose roots date back to the Fiber Technology Chair founded in 1960 within the Faculty of Agriculture at Ege University; it began offering undergraduate and graduate education for the first time in Türkiye in 1983 and has been part of the Faculty of Engineering since 1999.

As the only Department of Leather Engineering in Türkiye providing education at the undergraduate level, our department is also among the limited number of such institutions worldwide.

Our department aims to educate engineers with high standards to meet the needs of the leather and leather products industry. Our students specialize in the production and modification of finished leather types, physical and chemical testing, development of new techniques, fashion-oriented product design, and the fields of footwear and leather apparel.

The language of instruction in our department is 100% English. Our students graduate with the qualifications to compete on a global scale. Modern laboratories, interdisciplinary projects, and international exchange programs provide our students with the opportunity to transform theoretical knowledge into practice.

Our students achieve success in many national and international platforms, particularly in the “Deep Ideas Leather Design and Production Competition” organized in collaboration with the Aegean Leather and Leather Products Exporters’ Association. In this way, they establish strong connections with the industry, and our graduates have high employment opportunities both in Türkiye and abroad.

Our department continues to shape the sector not only through its educational activities but also through events that bring together industry professionals and students, national and international scientific meetings, and innovative research.
