History

Engineering education at Ege University began in 1968 with the establishment of the Faculty of Engineering Sciences and was restructured on June 22, 1982, by the Decree Law No. 41, taking the name Faculty of Engineering.
Our Faculty, which started education with the Departments of Computer, Food, Chemical, and Textile Engineering at its establishment, expanded over time with the addition of the Departments of Electrical and Electronics, Civil, and Mechanical Engineering in 1994, the Department of Leather Engineering in 1999, and the Department of Bioengineering—established for the first time in Türkiye—in 2000, reaching a well-established structure providing education in nine different engineering disciplines. In 2024, our Department of Computer Engineering was transformed into the Faculty of Computer and Information Sciences as a result of our evolving vision.
Today, our Faculty continues its educational activities at undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral levels with the Departments of Bioengineering, Leather, Electrical and Electronics, Food, Civil, Chemical, Mechanical, and Textile Engineering. As of the 2024–2025 academic year, we have 4,902 students, and to date, 19,704 graduates have contributed to engineering both in Türkiye and worldwide.
Our Faculty stands out with several “firsts” and unique features in engineering education in Türkiye:
- The Department of Food Engineering (1975) is the first department of Food Engineering established in Türkiye.
- The Department of Bioengineering (2000) is the first department established in this field in our country and has been selected as a “National Center of Excellence” in EU projects.
- The Department of Leather Engineering is the only department in Türkiye offering undergraduate education in this field.
Our Faculty provides education in line with international standards and offers its students opportunities for study and internships abroad through Erasmus+ and Orhun programs. MÜDEK accreditations remain valid until 2026 for the Department of Bioengineering and until 2027 for the Department of Food Engineering.
Our Faculty is also a leader in research. In 2025, it became the faculty with the highest number of project supports at Ege University with 5 TÜBİTAK 1001 projects and 1 TÜSEB project. Our departments also demonstrate the strength of our Faculty in global rankings: our Department of Textile Engineering ranked 26th in the world in 2024, while our Department of Food Engineering ranked 265th, becoming the top-ranked in Türkiye.
With its well-established history, strong academic staff, modern laboratories, international collaborations, and scientific achievements, the Faculty of Engineering at Ege University continues to educate the engineers of the future as the “faculty of firsts, uniques, and pioneers.”
