Population of İzmir is in excess of 3.5 million according to the last census, the literacy rate in women was 87.4%, and in men it was 96.3%, showing  a high standard. A University City, Izmir, has 9 universities including Ege University, Dokuz Eylul University, Institute of Technology, Katip Celebi University, Izmir University of Economics, Yasar University, Izmir University, Gediz University, Şifa University. The first university in Izmir and the Aegean region is Ege University and it offers all the advantages of a campus university.


Ege University established in 1955 as Turkey's fourth university in the Bornova district in Izmir, covering  an area of 3,450 square meters. To meet the need for training manpower of Turkey as well as the Aegean region, it contributes to  industry, commerce, health care, social and cultural development. In 1982, Dokuz Eylul University, was born from a part of Ege University. Later years Ege University played an important role in the development of all the universities in the country. Finally, Ege university is the guarantor of  two foundation universities in Izmir. Today, Ege University, carries the responsibility of being the first university in the region and has leading platforms of cooperation in different areas.
